Testing for Intelligence

As an educator we should know about the different learning styles that children learn. These learning styles will the teacher understand how that learn. Motor skills, language development and concepts are another that educators need to know about children. In   Head start children are tested by doing varies things such as kicking a ball, putting on socks, walking in a straight line, recognizing their name etc. they go by these indicators to see if a child is ready to move to the next task. Once these things are mastered they move on to things that may be a little harder. On the other hand children this age should not subjected to testing. Preschool children are all different and smart. They are their own individuals and if we just take more time to talk to them and let their creativeness show we will see that they know more than what we think they know.
In Japan they are testing the children English abilities. According to the article among 2.32 million participants taking the Eiken exam in 2012, 206,800 were primary students.  The parents of these children want them to show off their English speaking skills early which is clearly understandable. But we are getting obsessed with testing.

  1. Yes, I agree on head start testing. In pre-k at my school our assessment is defined as observing, documenting, and evaluating what children know, understand and can do.

  2. I also work in head start, and find the tedious assessment to be extreme at times. We assess and observe on a daily basis and have to subject the students to testing, when they do not meet the state standards we are required to either test them until they pass or write them a referall.

  3. Hey Rashawn, I am a head start teacher and I know the importance of testing a child to see what they can do and what they can't. I feel that it is important to know so that we can help that child grow. But in Japan I didn't know how obsessed that they are for their children to learn the English language. Thanks for that article.
